Multiple Choice Scantron Tests

Test Scanning and Grading

Information Technology provides a test scanning and grading service for multiple choice tests given with ScanTron(tm)  forms. Scanning is done at the IT Service Desk which is located in the north entrance to the Janet Quinney Lawson (JQL) Buildling.   (797-3080)

General Instructions:

Test answers should be marked on clean, flat USU General Purpose SCANTRON forms. Students should record their name, Student ID Number and answers with a #2 pencil. Ballpoint or felt-tipped pens DO NOT WORK! Answer sheets should be submitted to the IT Service Desk in JQL 108 (north entrance) with the following information: Instructor name and campus phone number, course number, billable departmental VMS username and a list of any options needed during the scanning and/or grading operation (see below).

Scanning:

The stack of sheets should be submitted with a KEY sheet on top. The key sheet should indicate the correct answer to each question. Multiple correct answers for a question are acceptable on the key sheet only, not on the students' answer sheets.

Scanning is done for 4 cents per page, charged to your departmental VMS username. If SCANTRON sheets are damaged or mismarked so that they cannot be read by the SCANTRON machine, the sheets will be repaired or copied at a cost of $2 per sheet. Sheets purchased by students at the beginning of the term are often too damaged to be processed automatically by the time they are used for your test. SCANTRON sheets can be purchased in quantity from the IT Service Desk in JQL 108 for $40/ream. SCANTRON sheets are in only one color, blue, but have a version field to facilitiate multiple-version testing.

Grading:

The GRADER program grades the scan sheets for a single-version test with a single KEY answer sheet. Separate Scoring Sections can be designated for single-KEY exams. You may designate different scoring rules for each of up to 20 blocks of questions. The scoring rule defines number of points for a correct answer and number of points deducted for a non-blank error. The default scoring rule is one point per right answer and no deduction for wrong answers. The key sheet may have multiple correct answers, any one of which is worth full credit. Student sheets must have only one answer marked per question; multiple answers are always counted as wrong. GRADER produces the following output to be emailed or returned with the scanned sheets:

  • Unadorned class listing with raw scores for use in a spreadsheet program or a computer gradebook program. A rule-generated WebCT Student ID is included, using the data on the scantron form or the owner name of a USU email account found by matching the ID number. This is normally emailed to the instructor when this option is requested.
  • Class listings sorted 2 ways (by student name and by score). High and low scores as well as mean score and standard deviation are reported.
  • A frequency distribution analysis of responses to each question is presented with percentage correct for each question. Easy and tough questions, as well as possible mistakes in the key sheet, can be identified!
  • A detailed summary for each student is optional. Each summary compares the responses from one student with the correct answer key for the applicable test version. It identifies the test, the student, the course, test version and reports the student's raw score and percentage as well as the class distribution statistics (high, low, mean and standard deviation). The summaries are emailed to students with active computer accounts (at no cost to the department) and may also be printed one per page (page charges to the departmental VMS username).
