Question

Q

How do I send email through a USU server while roaming?

Answer(s)

A

Problem:
We have many roaming users that can receive e-mail messages from USU
mail servers using their favorite email client, but unable send or reply
messages without the aid of local ISP mail server wherever they may be.
Some roaming users are often dealt with using USU mail web-interface to
compose their messages which can be cumbersome and slow at times
especially on wireless/dialup PDAs.

Solution:
USU has implemented an e-mail authenticated relay server that will
deliver outgoing messages without the need of local ISP mail server.
The roaming users will use their University A-Number and Password credentials for
authentication.

Roaming users must have an A-Number and Password in order to use this service.

SMTP mail configurations - Off campus(requires authentication)

  • Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server address: mailrelay.usu.edu
  • SMTP: port 25 (discouraged!!)
  • TLS: port 25 (Highly recommended!!)
  • (added) SMTPS (SSL): port 465 (some other or older email clients do not support TLS)
  • SMTP-AUTH (required!!!)  Uses A-Number credentials (must be current student, staff, or faculty)

This service has been successfully tested using Outlook, Outlook Express,
Thunderbird, Mozilla, iPhone, iPod Touch, and Palm VersaMail e-mail clients.
