Internet FactsUSU InternetAll devices that use the campus Internet service must be registered with Information Technology before they can fully be connected. USU uses the unique physical address(or MAC address) of each network device to identify computers that have been registered and are authorized to use the campus resources. There are currently 4 levels of access that you will receive when connecting to USU, depending on how you connect and if you are registered. Unregistered Network(IP addresses 172.16.*.*)Only allow access to registration and security pages. Registered Physical Connections(IP addresses 172.17.*.*)Registrations are tied to an on-campus location such as a Student dorm room or an on-campus office. Allows access to on-campus resources only. Any websites or resources that are not hosted on the USU network require you to use a proxy connection(proxy.usu.edu on port 80). Registered Mobile Connections(IP addresses 172.18.*.*)Computers that are registered but are not in the location that they are registered to. Also only allows access to on-campus resources. Any websites or resources that are not hosted on the USU network will require you to use a proxy connection. Registered Connections(IP addresses 129.123.*.*)Wireless - Registered to a specific device, provides open access anywhere there is a USUNet access point. Mobile/Wireless InternetUSU is moving toward 100%, on-campus wireless coverage(fall 2007). There are 2 wireless networks available at USU. Mobile Internet access is available through wireless access points and all physical data ports located on campus(use of physical ports will require use of the proxy server). BLUEZONEUn-encrypted restricted access: Allows access only to devices that have been registered with USU Information Technology. BLUEZONE-GUESTUn-encrypted restricted access: Allows access through access codes or tickets(pass-code that allows access for a single day) To use these tickets, the device must be automatically re-directed to the guest access page. Obtaining the Internet address and trying to login manually with the access code will not work. Any page requests that come from unregistered wireless connections will be automatically redirected to the guest access page where the code can be entered. To generate a ticket for a guest goto https://bluezone.usu.edu/ or contact the Service Desk. Guest access requires a small popup to be open to connect to the Internet. This popup keeps an active connection to USU that is used to verify the device as an authorized wireless device. If this window is closed or if you get disconnected, simply re-connect, re-open your browser and enter the guest access code in again.
