Steps to Take if Your Port Has Been Disabled
- Verify that your data port has been disabled.
- Determine the reason that your data port was disabled. You can locate the reason your port was disabled by looking at the disabled list under the column titled "Reason for Action" or by calling the Service Desk at 435-797-HELP (4357). If you have any questions about the reason your data port was disabled please contact the Service Desk.
- Take action to correct the problem
Ports can be disabled for a variety of reasons. The two most common reasons are viruses and hackers.
- Virus - If your port was disabled because of a virus, you will need to make sure that the virus has been removed and that you have an anti-virus program installed (ex. McAfee) with the latest virus definitions. You will also want to make sure that your computer has the latest operating system patches and updates.
- Hacked - If your data port was disabled due to being "hacked" or "compromised" then most often the "hacked" computer will need to be re-formatted and have the operating system re-installed. If you are unsure how to go about this or need assistance determining what needs to be done then please contact the Service Desk at 435-797-HELP (4357).
- Pay the fee and get the data port re-enabled. Once the problem has been resolved and you are ready to have the data port re-enabled you will need to visit: http://disabled.usu.edu/pay_enable.php and follow the steps to have your port re-enabled. You will need to complete the payment form and click on "Submit" before your request will be submitted for re-activation.
The fee for data port re-activation is as follows
- First time being disabled - $25.00
- Second time or more - $50.00
Students living in USU Housing that have signed a Routable IP Agreement form will be required to pay $50 to have their routable IP address re-connected.
Read more information about the reconnect fee.
Important Note: It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that your computer is safe to be re-connected to the network. If your computer is re-enabled and the same or other problems are detected, the port will be re-disabled and you will be responsible for paying the re-connect fee prior to having the data-port re-enabled again. Please make sure that the problems have been properly resolved.
