Important: Before proceeding, install the latest Windows updates and make sure your wireless network adpater has the latest drivers. Whether your computer has a built-in wireless adapter or a PC card-based external adapter, you should be able to download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website. Due to compatibility issues with untested wireless cards and operating systems, IT ServiceDesk cannot guarantee every device or card will be able to gain access to the wireless network; therefore, support is not assured for non-tested hardware and operating systems.
If you haven't already registered your computer on the USU BLUEZONE network, do so now at http://bluezone.usu.edu. Note: If you are planning to register your laptop from a wireless network, you may use the SSID BLUEZONE network.
First, you must configure Windows XP to manage your wireless networks; then you can configure BLUEZONESECURE using WPA/MS-PEAP. Once your computer is properly configured and within range of the BLUEZONESECURE network, you will be prompted to enter your A-Number and password to log on to the BLUEZONESECURE network.
If everything is installed correctly, you are ready to add BLUEZONESECURE wireless network profile. Following is the quickest way to create a wireless profile:
Step 1) Click on Start > Click on Connect To > Right click on Wireless Network Connection > Click on View Available Wireless Network.
If you don't see Connect to listed on the Start menu, locate and right click on the wireless icon from the system tray located at the bottom right of your screen (next to the clock).
Click on View Available Wirless Networks.
Step 2) In the *Wireless Network Connection dialog box, click on Change the order of preferred networks (located on the left panel).
Step 3) In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, check the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings box. The Preferred networks section displays a list of wireless networks and the order in which your computer will try to connect to them.
a) If BLUEZONESECURE is not already in the list, click Add.
b) If BLUEZONESECURE is already present, make sure it is at the top of the list. Click once on BLUEZONESECURE and click Move up until it moves to the top of the list. Then click on Property.
Step 4) In the Wireless network properties dialog box, do the following:
a) Enter BLUEZONESECURE in the Network name (SSID) field.
b) Choose WPA2 from the Network Authentication drop-down list and then choose AES from the Data encryption drop-down list.
Step 5) Now click on the Authentication tab and do the following:
a) Choose Protected EAP (PEAP) from the EAP type drop-down list and click on Properties.
c) Uncheck Automatically use my Windows Logon name and password (and domain if any) box and then click OK.
b) Select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) from the Select Authentication Method drop-down list and then click on Configure.
Step 6) Click OK to close any remaining windows that are open.
When your computer is in range of the BLUEZONESECURE wireless network on campus, Windows will attempt to authenticate and will ask you to accept the certificate. When this happens, click on the notification bubble and Windows will present you with a login window. Enter your A-number and password, and leave the Domain box empty.
A second notification bubble will appear and will ask you to accept the certificate (you will only do this once).
After accepting the certificate, you should then be connected to the BLUEZONESECURE network. It may take up to a minute to establish a connection.
If your computer does not connect at all, go back to View Available Wireless Networks (see step 1). Click once on BLUEZONESECURE and click Connect.
NOTE: Windows XP saves your A-number credentials (this is called "cached credentials"). The next time your computer is within range of BLUEZONESECURE wireless network, it will automatically connect. After you change your password, your computer's cached credentials will be out-of-sync with BLUEZONESECURE and you will see the same notification bubble as before. Click on the notification bubble and type in your A-number credentials as you did the first time.
