VPN Service for Windows XP (manual configuration instructions)

USU Information Technology has created a script that you may download and run that will automatically configure a VPN Connection and place an icon on your desktop.  To bypass the steps mentioned below download the VPN Windows Installer (Script) and install the VPN Windows Client on your Windows XP or Vista computer and you will be ready to connect through the VPN server quickly and easily!

Opening the NEW CONNECTION WIZARD

To get to the New Connection Wizard:

1.  Click on the Start menu

            If you see Control Panel, click on it.

            If you see Settings, place your cursor on it and then click Control Panel

2.    If you see Pick a Category in large letters, click on Switch to Classic View

3.    Double click Network Connections

4.    Click on the File menu

            Click on New Connection… The New Connection Wizard will open.

                   
 
Creating the Connection

1.    On the Welcome to the New Connection Wizard window, click Next 

2.    Select the Connect to the network at my workplace option and click Next

3.    Select the Virtual Private Network connection option and click Next

4.    Type a name* for the connection in the Company Name field, and click Next

            Note: In naming your connection, we recommend using a memorable name e.g. “USU VPN

5.    If you see the Public Network window

            Note: You will see the Public Network window if you either have dialup or another VPN connection configured.

•         If you use dialup, select the Automatically dial this connection option and the name of your Internet service provider (ISP) connection.

•         If you do not use dialup, select the Do not dial the initial connection option

6.    Type: vpn.usu.edu in the Host name or IP address field

7.    If you see the Smart card window

•         Select the Do not use my smart card option and click Next

8.    If you see the Connection Availability window

•         Select the option most appropriate for your situation and click Next

9.    On the Completing the New Connection window, we recommend checking the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop box

10. Click Finish. The New Connection Wizard window will close.


 
Configuring the VPN connection

            Note: If the connect window does not appear, double click on the USU VPN icon on the desktop

After the VPN connection is created, the Connect window should appear.

1.    Click on Properties

•         A large window of options will open.

2.    Click on the Security tab

3.    Click the IPSec Settings

•         A small window will appear

4.    Check the Use pre-shared key for authentication

5.    Type: aggies in the Key: field and click OK. The small window will close.

6.    Now click on the Networking tab

7.    Change the Type of VPN to L2TP IPSec VPN

8.    Click OK in the Properties window. The large option window will close.



Connecting

After configuring the VPN connection:

1.    Type your A# in the User name: field

2.    Type your Strong Password(from password.usu.edu) in the Password field

3.    Click Connect

Note: It may take up to a minute to establish a connection with the VPN server. Please be patient. If you have problems connecting, note any error messages and contact USU IT Service Desk (http://it.usu.edu)
