Do we need an institutional policy if IT is the only provider of VPN services?
The Virtual Private Network (VPN) server at USU is provided to give USU users secure and encrypted access to restricted USU resources when connected to the internet from outside of the usu.edu domain. Users who access USU resources via VPN are subject to the same rules and guidelines as users within the usu.edu domain.
VPN is not a general purpose tunnel to obscure your location and identity on the internet. It is not a permitted alternative to properly registering a computer within the usu.edu domain. Authentication will not be permitted from routed, non-routed, or temporary usu.edu IP addresses. Reported attempts to use VPN for illegal, inappropriate or otherwise sanctioned purposes can be tracked via authentication and session logs. Access will be denied when these uses are identified and additional disciplinary action may be taken. Restoration of access will be on the same terms as a network reconnection (q.v.).
