Subject: [USU Important] Update on wireless network instability
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I'm writing with an update on the ongoing wireless stability issues. Since my last message yesterday we have resolved two issues causing instability and identified a third contributing cause. The third requires a fix from the manufacturer of our network routing hardware. We are in active calls with them on both short-term workarounds and a permanent solution, and our own team continues to work the problem in parallel, with additional work scheduled for after classes conclude at 10:30 p.m. tonight.
I will send another update as soon as we have a workaround in place or a firm estimated time for the fix. You can find the real-time status of this incident at it.usu.edu.

September 2, 2026 - 2:30 p.m.
Things have stabilized for the last hour. We continue to monitor and are working with the third party vendor to correct the bug we are experiencing.
September 2, 2026 - 11:00 a.m.
Network hardware failure affected connections to the USU network, requiring reboots affecting wireless and some wired connections. Eduroam and Guest wireless connections are coming back up as wireless devices are being rebooted throughout campus. Please refresh your WiFi connections to reestablish connections. We are seeing continued instability that is being addressed as quickly as possible.
September 2, 2026 - 8:00 a.m.
Current status: Wireless issue is resolving - Monitoring continues - Last night's outage found an additional significant issue. Second bug identified and escalated to router manufacturer - partially mitigated.
Summary of the week:
- Monday: IP address assigning bottleneck (database lock inefficiency) identified and fixed - fix remains stable. RESOLVED
- Tuesday ~5pm: One of 5 wireless controllers was identified and removed from service that was operating erratically. There is sufficient capacity in the remaining 4 to handle full expected load. RESOLVED
September 1, 2026 - 10:30 p.m.
Next scheduled outage (time estimated). We are consulting with router service providers and will apply a potential fix this evening to avoid deeper network disruptions while classes are in session.

Subject: [USU Important] Update on wireless network instability
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
As many of you have noticed, we have experienced significant wireless network instability statewide since the start of the semester. I want to acknowledge the disruption this has caused and let you know where things stand. We have identified two load-related issues: one is resolved, and work on the second is ongoing.
The problems are largely limited to wireless. Wired connections remain stable, so teaching stations, computer labs, and university online services are unaffected.
Our team is working around the clock on the remaining issue. I will send an update once it is resolved, or sooner if we have a reliable estimated time to resolution. Real-time status is posted at it.usu.edu.

September 1, 2026 - 12:41 p.m.
Wireless issues continue - Network team continues to work to identify and resolve the issues.
September 1, 2026 - 10:45 a.m.
Some routing inconsistencies identified, short wireless outage to move wireless traffic to a different path.
September 1, 2026 - 9:00 a.m.
As we approached 22,000 wireless devices on the network, additional instabilities became evident. Troubleshooting continued throughout the day.
August 31, 2026 - 4:45 p.m.
The bottleneck identified at 1pm was resolved and the IP address assigning process began working correctly. An additional item was identified that will be addressed at 7pm, after class hours.
August 31, 2026 - :00 p.m.
Issue identified with assigning IP addresses to devices. Work continues on the wireless instability – Next steps will happen after hours to avoid disconnecting active connections. Wired connections are stable.
August 31, 2026 - 9:00 a.m.
Wireless network instability was reported across all USU campuses. Troubleshooting started to determine the source of the instability.
