My work has evolved into a blanket description of the apocalyptic world in which we live. Police brutality, racial discrimination, religious extremism, persecution of the LGBT communities, economic unrest, global warming, species extinction, habitat loss, holy wars, power trips and ego mania are the extremes my work addresses. Communitas Lecture Series: Jairo Salazar

Salazar earned an MA in art history from the University of North Texas. He has taught modern, contemporary, and Latin American art history courses at Universidad de Bogota Jorge Tadeo Lozano (Columbia) and University of North Texas. His research is devoted to issues related to the dialogical intersections between war, catastrophe, and trauma within the realms of contemporary art in Latin America. He is currently a faculty instructor at Colquitlam College and collaborates as a lecturer for Mobil Art School in Vancouver, Canada.

This exhibit shows a comprehensive project between Architectural Graphics I + II and CADD I + II. The students are tasked with designing a small residence for two people. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. Students begin their design by abstracting an object, which then develops into architecture. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

About the work in this exhibition he says: Many of the coal mines, tipples, and powerhouse stacks in Utah are beginning to disappear, due to the decline of petroleum-based energy industries. The boom-and-bust economy of southeastern Utah is turning toward more favorable efficient energy sources, so the life and traditions of the men and women who are dependent on these industries are changing. These painings and drawings represent the deteriorating structures, the weathering marks left on the landscape, and the faces of the people who live and work in the area. This Exhibition is a result of my understanding of labor and how that translates to functional pottery and my studio practice. This body of work focuses on pots that perform specific tasks as well as pots that may not be used as often as maybe a mug or bowl. This creates a perceived hierarchy in the gallery space as well as in the home. My hope is that my work makes the user consider why they choose to employ a piece of pottery. Does it perform well? Does it feel comfortable in hand? Does it enhance the user's experience? These standards and careful consideration of the forms intended use are the foundations of my studio practice as well as this exhibition.

Inspired by reflections of both outer and inner worlds I have experienced while exploring the deserts of southern Utah. The desert landscape is filled with diverse flora that take on alien like forms, seeming as if I am observing life on another planet. Inhabiting a Terrain that can appear desolate at first, but eventually reveals its brilliance and becomes surprisingly vibrant.
In spite of the harsh unrelenting conditions the flora in this area not only survive; they thrive. The adaptations they have made result in the creation of an obscure yet alluring wilderness. Like an agave whose stunning layered leaves lure you in, but get to close and they will harm you. these lifeforms are admirably resilient and adaptable.

Recent and new collaborative works in drawing, printmaking, photography, and video by Angela Bartram and Lee Deigaard
The animal and being animal is a proposition and position that invites observational and critical debate. To observe the non-human animal is too often tense and politicized; to take on an understated what-it-is-to-be-animal is a sensitized and sensitive means to understand differing perspectives. Artists Lee Deigaard (USA) and Angela Bartram (UK) critically approach the animal as the animal. Using diverse methods and materials and curious to potentialities, they explore working as humans from an animal-centric perspective. They bring sensitivities to their handling of the animal as both artistic subject and collaborator, of behaving as animal, in order to observe and engage with empathy and openness to the unexpected, to animal insight and revelation. Iterative long term projects in drawing and printmaking foreground proximity and proprioceptive, nearly devotional studio and caretaking practices centering on respiration and companionate movement within a global pandemic. This exhibition explores the socialized and familiar in close observation, directly and indirectly, in their individual yet companion practices and additionally features the artists in conversation and active collaboration on site in the gallery.

Communitas Lecture Series: Sara Winston

Sara J. Winston is an artist based in the Hudson Valley region of New York, USA. She works with photographs, text, and the book form to describe and respond to chronic illness and its ongoing impact on her body, mind, family, and memory. Sara is the Photography Program Coordinator at Bard College; on the faculty of the Penumbra Foundation Long Term Photobook Program; and a contributor to Lenscratch. She has projects forthcoming with Molto Molto (Brighton, UK) and Push Pull Editions (Corvallis, OR).

Paper & Clay is a national juried exhibition open to all BFA & MFA printmaking and ceramic students across the country. This year’s exhibition showcases 54 exceptional contemporary student works from 20 various academic institutions. This year’s juror is printmaking artist and University of Minneapolis professor Jenny Schmid.
The reception for the exhibit is on Thursday, Feb 16, from 5 – 7 PM.
